Before deregulation, the utilities held the monopoly for power generation assets nationwide.

They were in total control of the generation, transportation and delivery of electricity to the consumer. No competition meant no choice and no choice meant higher pricing because utilities were not incentivized to keep costs in check.

Deregulation has forced power providers into competition with one another. You’re no longer forced to accept the utility company’s price for energy supply. Deregulation has given you a say in who supplies your energy, on what terms and for what price. Today, the energy industry wins its business through competitive rates, attractive terms and better product offerings.

Deregulation only affected energy supply. There’s no risk to you when you switch. There’s no interruption in service and the utility company still maintains the delivery infrastructure.
